Two Mothers Work To Change New York School Bus Service Laws

Two New York mothers are calling for changes in state school bus service rules to guarantee bus transportation for students whose parents are not able to drive them due to serious health issues, according to ABC 7.ABC 7.

The local news agency says Tara Notrica and Amy Mogel have been working for years to make changes to the rules that make school transportation difficult for their children.

Tara Notrica had a disorder that can cause her to go into anaphylactic shock at any time, which means she could be a great risk behind the wheel of a vehicle. Notrica’s children, however, were not eligible for school bus transportation under state law because they lived half a mile from their school, and so the mother has helped introduce a bill that would guarantee transportation for children in similar circumstances no matter the distance within the district.

Amy Mogel first introduced the bill several years ago when it was vetoed by Gov. David Peterson, and again by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2012. The mother lives with a neurological disorder which prohibits her from driving, and says the condition has caused severe struggles to get her children to school each day. However, she remains hopeful the bill will pass by the end of the current legislative session, which ends next week.
