Finding a great bus is important, but any bus will fall to pieces frighteningly fast without good care. You have to inspect and maintain your bus on a regular basis to keep it in proper operating shape and prevent your vehicle from going out of commission suddenly. In places that aren’t used to getting a lot of winter weather, it is easy to forget about cold weather maintenance and prevention like corrosion protection. But, if your region gets any winter weather, your vehicles should be prepared to face it.
The ice and snow might not seem very dangerous, but the de-icing chemicals used on today’s roads can do some heavy damage to your bus. Road salt is well-known for its corrosive nature, but newer de-icing formulas which contain things like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride can be even worse.
Without regularly retreating your vehicles, the protective finishes can wear off or get compromised by damage from gravel and rocks. Once the protective treatment is compromised, corrosive elements from pollution and de-icers will gradually eat into the undercarriage, slowly deteriorating the chassis, bumpers, and nearly every other part of your buses. Considering how large of an investment a single bus is, you don’t want your vehicles to be ruined prematurely.
Thankfully, you can prevent corrosion by regularly retreating your bus with protective finishes that can keep your bus from needing repairs early in its lifespan. Several major manufacturers such as Thomas Built Buses create their own corrosion protection products which are aimed to protect every surface of your bus.
Simply keeping your bus clean also goes a long way in preventing corrosion. Make sure to use a soap and water mix when washing your bus, and don’t forget to get the undercarriage thoroughly clean.
If you notice some corrosion already forming, be sure to repair and retreat the damaged area promptly. You don’t want to let the corrosion spread.
