Bus Cleaning Tips

Bus Cleaning Tips

Cleaning is time-consuming and is never a one time fix-it solution. Whether it is a cluttered closet, dirty car or the windows on your house, the time required to complete these tasks ends up being a barrier to keeping them clean. Many people see the mess, but either can’t get their heads around how to best tackle the project or they simply do not have the time to get it done. This also translates to the world of buses. With an even bigger vehicle that has lots of windows, the time required to tackle this project is even greater, and those who are being shuttled in these vehicles will be keenly aware of any mess. Don’t worry. Here are some helpful cleaning tips for your bus.

Here is some important information about bus cleaning:

Trash and Dust

Your first steps of any bus cleaning should be to pick up all the trash and make sure all of the surfaces are dusted. Your passengers, especially children, are inevitably going to be messy and leave trash behind either intentionally or unintentionally. Start by picking up all the trash that has been left behind to get any large items off the floor and seats. If there are smaller bits of trash scattered throughout, you can get in there with a broom and sweep them up. Once this is done, you can dust off all of the surfaces that may have collected dust over time such as the seats, dashboard, or the door

Start Up Top

Once you decide to undertake the project of cleaning your bus, everything should be done in the right order. You will want to start cleaning the roof, walls, and seats before you clean anything else. As you clean the upper reaches of the bus, dirt, dust and other debris will fall to the floor where you can clean it up later.

The Outside

While some school districts and businesses own automatic bus washes, these are not easily owned by smaller school districts or smaller businesses. When an automatic bus wash is not available, many buses go long periods of time without a wash. In these cases, buses can be washed by hand. Many bus detailing companies use a two-step method that involves a low pH acid to help loosen dirt followed by a high pH wash that wipes the dirt away without scrubbing. If using the two-step method is not an option, the old soap and water method will work just fine, it will simply require more work.

Waxing Your Bus

Buses can be waxed just like regular cars! Spending the extra time and money to wax your buses can help lengthen the life of the coat and protect your fleet from the elements and corrosion. Just be careful – if your bus has already significantly oxidized, wax can remove the paint. If you are unsure if waxing your bus is a good idea, consult with a professional for help.

Disinfecting

In the age of COVID-19, there are many guidelines that school districts and businesses have been required to follow. While many recommend quarantining the bus for 48 hours in between uses, this is simply not feasible during the workweek. Instead, there are a few easily accessible items to help you clean floors, walls, and seats. For sidewalls and floors, standard isopropyl alcohol works great. It is safe, easily found at the store, and works wonders for sanitation. However, you will want to use a different product on seats. For seats and plastics in your bus, products like Lysol Foaming Disinfectant Cleaner and Fantastik Antibacterial All-Purpose Cleaner will do the trick. Just try to avoid using products that contain harmful chemicals such as bleach and ammonia.
