Repurposed buses are an exciting and unique way to use one of the most iconic vehicles on the road, but it is important to remember that safety always comes first. Just because your school bus isn’t being used in the typical way doesn’t mean you can or should ignore the rules put into effect to protect students.
The video below shows a news report from June when a young girl was caught on camera riding a repurposed bus by sitting in the open doorway. According to reports, the child’s grandparents owned the bus and were attempting to makeup for the lack of air conditioning by allowing the child to “enjoy” the breeze from the open doorway. As the person filming repeatedly says: “That’s not safe at all.”
The video may be an isolated incident, but it is important to keep in mind that repurposed buses are still school buses at heart. Without all the installed safety equipment, there is even more need to follow all safety practices possible and to operate the vehicle in the best manner possible. If you wreck a converted bus, you could also be damaging your home or business.
