Boston Schools Backtrack on Record Audio Within School Buses

Bus Camera

At the end of July I covered the debate flaring up around Boston School District’s decision to equip all 750 school buses with cameras that record both audio and video. While the debate has continued on, little word had gotten out about how the school would respond to the criticism until yesterday.

Thursday, Boston school officials made it clear they will only use the cameras within school buses to only record images and not voices or other audio. It is far from a satisfying conclusion to the debate between student privacy and student safety, but Lee McGuire, School Department spokesman, indicated the fight might not be over when he told The Boston Globe, “if we decide there is value in audio, we will bring the issue before the School Committee and develop a policy to ensure student privacy.”
