It can be hard to show the average driver the extreme risk they take every time they decide to break the law and pass a loading or unloading bus with the stop-arm extended. Many people think they would see if they were going to hit a young student in the process of passing a bus and be able to stop accordingly, but the number of students hit every year due says otherwise.
Every time you break the law by breaking stop-arm laws, you risk the life of a child.
I’ve written about this issue several times in the past, as well as the attempts to prevent stop-arm violations with external cameras and increased police enforcement. But, sometimes the best way to educate is to show, not tell.
There is hopefully no footage available of a child actually being injured in one of these incidents, and it would be unethical to share if such footage does exist.
However, footage of a recent close-call has been making the rounds, showing a semi driver coming within feet of hitting a student exiting a bus. The driver has since turned himself into authorities, but remember the video below next time you think about passing a stopped bus. The driver was lucky no one was hurt, but not everyone is so lucky.
